Point in Time Count
Thank you for your interest in The Hot Spring County Homeless Coalition, Inc. and your interest in finding out more about the homeless population in Hot Spring County. Each year the HSCHC participates in the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Point-in-Time Count (PIT count) which is a snap shot of the homeless population for a 24 hour period.
On January 23, 2018 HSCHC participated in the 2018 HUD PIT count this was done at Ouachita River Fellowship on East Page Avenue in Malvern, from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm. Meals were served by St. John's Catholic Church of Malvern, and desserts were provided by the Presbyterian Church, other assistance was available to the homeless in Hot Spring County. The Count is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for communities across the country to receive funding.
For that period of time 539 homeless individual/families were reported (350 adults and 350 children). Last year the HSCHC assisted 170 individuals/families with either temporary emergency housing in a motel room, referrals to shelters and/or other types of assistance in the community or surrounding areas. Since there is not a shelter in the county assistance available to those experiencing homelessness is extremely limited. The HSCHC is made up of volunteers so manpower and resources are limited.
2017
The Hot Spring County Homeless Coalition, Inc., participated on January 24, 2017, in the National Point in Time Count of People Experiencing Homelessness. This was done at Ouachita River Fellowship on East Page Avenue in Malvern, from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm. Meals were served by St. John's Catholic Church of Malvern, and other assistance was available to the homeless in Hot Spring County. The Count is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for communities across the country to receive funding.
January 2017 HSCHC counted 327 individuals who were homeless 225 of those were children and 102 were adults. This is just a
snapshot and those that we have contact with on that day. In 2016 the HSCHC assisted approximately 76 individuals with temporary emergency housing, transportation to their destination or a shelter in another county, food, clothing, and referrals to needed
services. January 2016 HSCHC counted 355 individuals who were homeless 296 of those were children and 59 were adults. January 2015 HSCHC counted and surveyed a total of 207 individuals experiencing homelessness. Our goal is to count people in our community who are living on the street and in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or domestic violence shelters.
The Point in Time Count is intended to provide a snapshot of a community's homeless population, and is one way to collectively understand the scope and breadth of homelessness in our nation and our individual communities. The count is an important effort to make sure the voices of people experiencing homelessness in your community are heard and efforts are made to provide appropriate services. It also helps communities develop more effective plans and measure progress toward ending homelessness.
